The Cut of a diamond can make all the difference in the world! The shape can be pleasing to the eye, but it is the proportion of the different angles within the stone that display it's brilliance. There are many variables to a diamond's make. Thicker stones can be dark, while shallowly cut stones will leak light and appear cloudy when soiled. When a diamond is cut to good proportions, light is bounced around inside and is dispersed through the top of the stone.
Color

| Color is the one "C" that can be noticed at arm's length. A brilliant colorless diamond has a fire that is without equal! Most people pay the most attention to the clarity of diamonds, but color and cut are the qualities which will be seen by everyone that admires your gem. Absolutely colorless diamonds are very rare. As diamond color grades slide down the scale towards yellow or brown, they lose that extra bright characteristic that we think of as brilliance. Colorless diamonds that are well cut seem to have their own light source!
Clarity
Inclusions in a diamond may interfere with the passage and reflection of light through the stone. Most will not affect the beauty of a diamond, but the degree will affect its price. Inclusions are seldom easy to spot by eye, so diamonds must be inspected under magnification.
GIA Clarity Grades:
- IF: Internally Flawless - 10 power darkfield magnification shows no natural inclusions. None.
- VVS: Very,Very Slightly Included - This means that only one dot may be found under magnification.
- VS: Very Slightly Included - Small single or even smaller groupings of natural inclusions are visible to the trained eye with 10 power darkfield illuminated magnification.
- SI: Slightly Included - Still clean to the naked eye,these stones have a few inclusions which will be evident to the viewer using 10 power magnification.
- I: Included, - Diamonds of this average quality offer size for ones money rather than perfection. This level of inclusion will compromise the gem's dispersion or sparkle.
Carat Weight
The carat is a unit of weight, one fifth of a gram. Size can be a big consideration but bigger is not always best in diamonds...quality is what counts!
Cost
You have heard the advertised guideline suggested by DeBeers: "Spend two month's salary on you engagement ring". It is different for everyone, however. The important thing is to obtain the sort of fine quality gemstone that says what you want it to say. Don't let others tell you what to buy...buy what you think is appropriate.
